A new adult fantasy romance set in and inspired by Ancient Rome. A story of guilt and forgiveness. A story of war and change. A story of two warriors, willing to sacrifice everything for love.

A story or war and love as the wolf children of Mars battle against the Daemons that haunt Rome.

‘Of Fangs and Shadows’ by Jessica J Ayala is a fantasy romance that follows Remus, an exiled member of the werewolf pack and known throughout the Empire as the Lone Wolf, and Diane, a powerful she-wolf and one of the strongest warriors of the Rome pack. Remus and Diane are brought together as the Lone Wolf and the pack’s goals align, working to overcome their pasts and inner struggles as they are drawn closer in the shadow of a war to come.

Interwoven with mythology, this is a low fantasy story where Daemons, Roman gods and mythological beings exist alongside humans. The hunt for the Order, a sinister masked group that aligns themselves with the Daemons is action packed, and the narrative direction towards a larger war builds tension. I found that the world the author created was detailed and immersive, and the characters are multi-faceted and interesting. I was keen to learn more about the pack, what led Remus to be cast out as the Lone Wolf and the shadow power Diane is able to control. I also enjoyed the relationship between Remus and Diane, the tension between them bubbles throughout the plot, however both characters also have the space to develop and overcome their own obstacles.

An enjoyable book, I found ‘Of Fangs and Shadows’ easy to read, and was always keen to know what happened next. There’s action, shocks, mythology and a few spicy scenes as Remus and Diane get closer. I don’t think fantasy romance fans will be disappointed.
